Looking for answers?

When I was 12 I was in a coma for three weeks as a result of a disease called encephalitis. It is the swelling of the brain most likely to be caused by a mesquito carring the disease and complicated by severe depression caused by the passing of my mother six months earliers. I was just wondering if anyone has known or has had it themselves and if so have you had any complications or perminent side effects? I am now 27 but I still get horrible migraines and some sensitivity to light. When I had it I lost my memory, I had to relearn word association, how to read and even how to walk. I made a very long but good recovery but sometimes I find my short term memory not right or sometimes I wonder if I am having false memories, things I think happened but noone can tell me for sure. I haven't had a check up since I was 18 but at that time I had just lost my dad and not paying much attention. I can't remember what things if any could result from it in the future. Any help would be appreciated
Answer:
It sounds like you had a rough time as a teenager. I'm sorry for your losses. I haven't had encephalitis myself, but you can definitely have neurological problems after recovering from the infection. It might be a good idea to have a checkup, since it has been a while. A neurologist or infectious disease specialist would know more about what to expect, based on the particular virus that caused your encephalitis. Good luck, and I hope you can find some answers.
