Low blood count?

my mother had her usual blood test yesterday. this morning she got a call from the hospital saying that her blood count was low enough for her to come in and get it checked out. we was all alittle shook up , especially her. shes gonna be in the hospital for a few days. her count went up while she was there. she didnt seem to show any kind of symptoms of anything serious lately. is this a serious situation or is it just a matter of the hospital getting her count back up ?
Answer:
The blood caries oxygen to the cells of the body. the less blood cells in the blood, the less oxygen can be carried around. This is information from a respiratory point of view. There are also issues with nutrients but I don't know them that well.
Sometimes infections cause that. She may also be anemic, in which case, they might suggest iron supplements and some modifications to her diet. If they succeeded in getting her count to go up, they probably have some idea as to how she can maintain it and that is a good thing.
what type of low count? Hemoglobin, hematocrit, glucose, platelet.? There are a number of things that can be low that may require additional attention from the doctors. If she has a low hematocrit - she may have anemia, which is when there are low levels of hemoglobin in the blood (these are molecules that carry iron and oxygen throughout you body). There are several types of anemia and it can be caused by a lot of different things (medication, infections, disease etc...). If she has a low white blood count - she may have an infection. This could be serious situation for her, since they're keeping her in the hospital I would assume there may be something wrong. If you have anymore questions post an update and I'll check back later to see if I can help in any way
