Hi, I think what you are trying to do is really worthwhile, so well done to you.I worked within a health visiting team that specialised in working with the homeless last year, and alot of the clients were asylum seekers. Because of the nature of the job we needed to provide health related leaflets in a wide range of languages. We also used interpreters alot when visiting clients. This is really important, because even people who speak good english often have difficulty understanding medical imformation. We used the following sites alot to print off imformation for clients:http://www.multikulti.org.uk/http://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/...These sites are also used alot by people whose first language is not English, so it may be worthwhile contacting the site administrator and asking if they will run an article on what you do.You could also try contacting a translation service to see if they will help you produce leaflets in a range of languages. This site will also let you produce letters etc in range of languages:http://www.communicate-health.org.uk/car...This site is also useful as it gives details of agencies involved in working with ethnic minorities:http://www.raceforhealth.org/information...You could then contact local councils to see if they have an asylum seekers / refugee support project or similar, who may be willing to distribrute leaflets to clients on your behalf. It may also help to attend multicultural events, such as music festivals, fundraising days etc. My local council holds a music festival every year, and the health team I was working in attended this last year. We had a stand with health promotion related leaflets in a range of languages, games to play etc, and it was really successful.Best of luck, Mel.
In diabetes care we try to make leaflets available to all ethnic backgrounds by printing in diff languages and distributing through places like social work as well as the usual gps and hospitals. Hope that helps - I know how important the work of the trust is. xxx
